Four clubs will define this season, and three of them changed manager over the summer. Here is what each of them is actually trying to do.

1. Arsenal defend a title for the first time in twenty-two years

Mikel Arteta’s side are the only one of last season’s top four who did not change anything. No new manager, no rebuild, no adjustment period — just the same team that won the league, plus a 3–0 win over Manchester City in the Community Shield and a 3–0 opening night against Coventry with goals from Havertz, Saka and Ødegaard.

That stability is the whole argument. Every rival is learning a new system in August. Arsenal are not. The counter-argument is that no Arsenal squad has successfully defended a title since 2004, and that a side built to chase looks different from one built to hold.

2. Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool

Arne Slot was sacked on 30 May, a year after winning the league. Liverpool replaced him with the manager who had just taken Bournemouth to sixth and into Europe for the first time in the club’s history — a two-year deal, and a deliberate choice of style over safety.

Iraola’s Bournemouth pressed higher and more relentlessly than anyone in the division. The question at Anfield is whether a squad assembled for a possession-first idea can run the way his teams have to run. His first competitive answer came at Newcastle, where Liverpool went 2–1 behind and needed a late goal to leave with a point.

3. Manchester City after Guardiola

Ten years, six Premier League titles, twenty trophies, one Champions League. Pep Guardiola announced his departure on 22 May and left a club built entirely around a single idea.

Enzo Maresca returned on 29 June on a three-year deal — City paid Chelsea around £17m to release him — having been Guardiola’s assistant during the treble season. He inherits Erling Haaland and a squad missing John Stones and Bernardo Silva, and he began with a 2–1 win over Bournemouth after going in behind at half time. Coming from behind on day one is not the worst possible start for a manager whose main problem is that everyone is looking for cracks.

4. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea

Chelsea’s last eighteen months read like a warning. Maresca resigned in December 2025 to chase the City job. Liam Rosenior replaced him and was sacked. Caretaker Calum McFarlane took them to ninth. Alonso is the fifth permanent appointment under BlueCo since 2022, on a four-year deal, arriving from a Real Madrid spell that lasted 233 days and ended by mutual agreement.

He is a better coach than that Madrid record suggests — the unbeaten Bundesliga title at Leverkusen is not a fluke you can explain away. Whether Chelsea are a club where any coach can succeed is the more interesting question, and it is not one Alonso controls.

The promoted three

The assumption every August is that the promoted clubs are relegation fodder. Matchday one did not cooperate.

Hull City beat Manchester United 2–0 at the MKM Stadium, two goals inside the first half through Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, back in the division after nine years away. Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2–1 through Emersonn and Jack Clarke, needing only one season to come straight back up. Coventry City lost 3–0, but they lost to the champions on opening night, twenty-five years after their last top-flight match.

Two wins from three. The three clubs that came up currently sit above Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

They meet each other early, too: Coventry host Hull on 29 August, a promoted-club six-pointer eight days into the season.

Transfers and deadline day

The summer window opened on 15 June and closes at the end of Monday 31 August. Eight of the twenty clubs have already played a match that exposed exactly what they still need, which is the entire reason deadline day exists.

Watch the promoted three in particular. Hull and Ipswich have both banked three points and have the strongest possible case for spending; Coventry conceded three to the champions and have the strongest possible case for panicking. Historically, promoted clubs do most of their meaningful business in the final seventy-two hours.

Season format and key dates

The 2026/27 campaign is the 35th Premier League season and the 128th of English top-flight football. It runs from 21 August 2026 to 30 May 2027, across 33 weekend rounds and five midweek rounds.

Both the opening and closing matchweeks were pushed back a week to make room for the 2026 World Cup, which is why the season started later than usual and why several clubs began pre-season with squads still returning in stages from the tournament.

One rule change matters this year: gambling sponsors are banned from the front of matchday shirts for the first time. Betting brands can still appear on sleeves, training kit, LED boards and elsewhere in club partnerships, so this is a narrower change than the headlines suggested — but it is the first time the league has restricted them at all.

Coventry City, Ipswich Town and Hull City came up. West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Burnley went down.
